Andrew Finlayson
Executive Vice President
Andrew Finlayson is the Executive Vice President of Digital and AI Strategies at SmithGeiger, where he works with leading media companies on broadcast, digital, streaming, and AI strategies. He joined SmithGeiger after being a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University, where he focused on structured and unstructured data and the emerging semantic web. Many of his client engagements have since involved machine learning, metadata, and emerging generative AI tools. He has presented on AI to several leading broadcasters and spoken at Stanford, Webster University, the National Science Foundation’s working group on the future of news, NAB, and other broadcasting associations.
Prior to Stanford, he was a journalist who worked in radio, TV, and digital for companies including ABC, Meredith, Cox, CBS, and Fox. He has reported from Asia, Mexico, Germany, Russia, and across the US. He is also the author of the business book, “Questions That Work” (Harper Collins), which has been translated into five languages. Since questions are how many people interact with AI using services like ChatGPT, I’m sure he’ll help us think of important questions we need to consider regarding the ethical, practical, financial, and even emotional impact of AI on every part of Iowa broadcasters’ business going forward.
